We all know the song, and this tells the story behind the song, but that takes the back seat to the Abolition cause championed by William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd). We see his friendship with William Pitt the Younger (Benedict Cumberbatch) and how he met his future wife (Romola Garai, who always reminds me of Anj). But the best performance is from Albert Finney, who plays John Newton, who wrote the words to the hymn.
The story is good, but I can't put my finger on what I find flawed with the storytelling. Can someone help me with this?
