Sex and the single scientist

While reading New Scientist, I saw this.

The visual is so funny that I had to tell my brother, arguably the bigger nerd between the two of us. He said this TV show theme song started playing in his head.

No guarantees that you'll find guys as funny as those on the show on New Scientist Connect, a.k.a. dating.newscientist.com, but I suspect they're there, if you look hard enough. (You might need a scanning electron microscope though.)

The service is run by The Dating Lab, which provides similar services to other media brands.

TNAV

The Metro Manila Traffic Navigator now includes Marcos Highway. Not the entire stretch, but it's good to know that this area is important enough to be monitored. It's quite cool when it updates before your eyes.

Happy driving!

How to wear black

DON'T

I am sorry, Manila Bulletin. Restraint in the use of iSomething is what Steve Jobs would have appreciated. The wording of the headline doesn't sound right. (And he would have done something about that masthead of yours.) Nice try, though. Almost there.

DO

I am thrilled to be part of Vault's latest issue as a contributor. It's one of those projects that, at the back of my head, I knew I did not have the time for but wanted so much to do. I must thank my editor for her patience and for trusting me with this.

Think Quarterly

I could say "+1" to Google's magazine, Think Quarterly. But what I really want to say is "like".

Supercuts!

Because people put effort into editing these. And a couple of guys bothered to put them all in one place

Looking at glass differently

That day will come...when a man actually makes your family scrambled eggs for breakfast and looks genuinely happy to see you when you get home. Well, that's part of it. Thinking about all the applications of technology on so many surfaces makes you want to live in the future.

What would Marcel ask?

He'd ask lots of slumbook questions.

This is Proust for the internet generation. Sure I'd like to answer big questions, but I'm not sure if I'd do that here. This is Formspring of a different sort. (And I don't see myself on Formspring. There are many questions I don't want to be faced with.)

The writing on the (Facebook) wall

NYT's tech guy David Pogue, a funny geek who can accompany himself on the piano (summa with distinction in Music from Yale), has written a love letter to the Canon S95. My brother has been talking about this for months. Must. Upgrade. Soon.

Why does this matter to me? Read Pogue's bio. You know I have a soft spot for former Broadway accompanists. If you haven't seen them yet, go look for his performances on TED.com.

Men of the week

I'm in a cybercafe (with no coffee) at Sta. Lucia East Mall. Why on earth am I here? There's no Internet at home and I have work to do.

When I stepped out in a t-shirt and jeans, my neighbor commented, "Masang-masa ka ngayon." Just trying to blend in. It's not a good time to wear a dress.

Shout-outs to the guys who populated my week in front of screens:

1. Mark Zuckerberg. Because the theatrical trailer of The Social Network is out and he needs some love from Facebook users.

2. The much loved, hated and parodied Old Spice Guy, Isaiah Mustafa. He's on a horse (and a boat). On a bike. On a boat (again). Talking to Ellen, Rose, Alyssa (x4), mrskutcher, Guy Kawasaki Perez Hilton and more than 100 other people. Responding to your voicemail. Silver fish hand catch!

3. Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon Levitt, for making Christopher Nolan's intelligent but cringe-inducing over-scored film bearable.

4. To C, R, K and N. A few words from you are enough. Thank you.

Uh-oh

I Write Like says:

I write like
James Joyce

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

For my job, that's not a good sign. I used my Boracay post for my colleagues from last week. Using the short post before this one, it's Stephenie Meyer. I'm not sure which one is worse.

Heavy and horrible

I've been resisting since yesterday, but since so many of the blogs I read have been posting about it, I thought it best to be informed and gave in. But I could not watch the short version of the civilian killings in Baghdad on WikiLeaks' Collateral Murder without stopping several times to take deep breaths.

I salute the brave souls who made it possible for the world to see the truth.

And now, time for a break. Doctor Octoroc Presents Dr. Horrible in 8-bit. Thanks, I needed that.

Meet Red

After three and a half years of companionship, it's time to let Silver go. Silver stayed with me in London and Roskilde and faithfully helped me with my essays and dissertations. But the years have taken their toll and Silver has many aches and pains. I need a savvy assistant for work and play. A new toy.

Red is quick, bright and up-to-date (though loud at times). Silver's 40GB HDD was very limiting. Red's 320GB can accommodate virtually anything I want to create. Size does matter after all.

Three ways to celebrate Easter

1. Have a laugh. Try the 40+ (Funny) Error Messages You’ve Never Seen Before.

2. Get active. Practice Jumpology.

3. If you'd rather exercise your brain, get hooked on Alltop's Top Futurity News.

Happy Easter!

Evolving narratives

Storytellers will find jawbone.tv intriguing. If that's not enough for you, Swarm Entertainment's other projects, Rekill and Nawlz, are great eye-openers to the possibilities way beyond your bedtime read-along.

Safer Internet Day

(Was on the road for more than nine hours today. Still not in a posting mood, but thought you should know...)

The Internet has opened up so many avenues of communication and has become the means to so many different ends. It has showed mankind new and positive ways of bringing people together, but at the same time has become a playground for criminals and people with dubious intentions--a place for the best and worst in man.

Today is Safer Internet Day. Whatever your age is, whatever you do online, think before you post!
