Journey to the Centre of the Earth, part 1

On the same year that the first Underground line became operational, Jules Verne was in Paris writing one of his most famous novels. It is fitting, then, for this artwork on the Underground to be entitled Journey to the Centre of the Earth, "the result of a six-month collaboration between artist Gayle Chong Kwan and Borough Market traders, Southwark College students, London Underground staff and Roast Restaurant workers". I signed up for the free Sensory Tour organised by Platform For Art.

With us were our guide Cassie (who developed the tour), sign language interpreter Andrew, student/restaurateur Jonathan from Trinidad & Tobago, a photographer (whose name I forget), and Dean, who composed the music.

We started at Hollow Earth, Southwark Tube station, which is wrapped with enlarged images of food that grows underground and juxtaposed with "constellations" of sensory maps. We had to guess four spices according to their smells.
