My paternal grandmother turns 90 today. I took an old photo of hers and painted it (so you see, the technique also works in a different shade). Turning a 4x3 inches reference into 4x3 feet painting is quite a challenge. I hope I can convince her that it's her!
she's a beauty :) i guess your rough monochrome style serves the antique look well
ReplyDeletesalamat, ian! it turned out better than i thought it would. but i had to use the brush for the face for definition. feeling makeup artist!
ReplyDelete"had to use the brush" meaning this was palette knife all over?
ReplyDeleteyep, that's pretty much the way i work. dry palette knife, if there is such a technique. also explains why i need to work large :)
ReplyDeletedry palette knife... interesting. i have always liked obvious thick sweeping strokes with the palette knife, but yours is unique. i'm guessing you scratch on it to show the layer underneath? i can't really tell from pics.
ReplyDeletenope! that's why you have to come see the next exhibit :)
ReplyDeletei'll be there, for sure! :)
