Shoestring eats

...without actually having to eat a shoestring.

London being an expensive city, how do you go about a lunch budget for £3 or less? For an appetite like mine, which is light to average, here are some no-cook suggestions that don't include the uni caf.

1. Slim Pret sandwich (~£1.50) and yogurt (10p to 75p, depending on brand). Essentially half a sandwich, but filling enough.

2. Make your own couscous (72p per kilo-will last for ages) and buy rotisserie chicken (under £1 at Somerfield). Did I say no cook? All you need to do is boil some water and pour over couscous. Think of it as instant rice. A nice hot meal.

3. Subway deal. Sub of the day (£1.99) plus drink and either crisps or a cookie. At £2.99, probably the best deal in town. McDonalds also has a very similar £1.99 Deli of the day, which you could have with cheese, salad and brown bread. And they're working on phasing out hydrogenated oil by the end of the year. Woot!

4. Japan Centre maki £1 to £2.60 for the 4 rolls or 6 small pieces. Authentic goodness.

5. Tai Buffet in Angel has filling vegetarian pick-n-mix takeaways for £3.
