Sex and the single scientist

While reading New Scientist, I saw this.

The visual is so funny that I had to tell my brother, arguably the bigger nerd between the two of us. He said this TV show theme song started playing in his head.

No guarantees that you'll find guys as funny as those on the show on New Scientist Connect, a.k.a. dating.newscientist.com, but I suspect they're there, if you look hard enough. (You might need a scanning electron microscope though.)

The service is run by The Dating Lab, which provides similar services to other media brands.

Supercuts!

Because people put effort into editing these. And a couple of guys bothered to put them all in one place

Someday, I hope to deliver a meaningful speech that somebody would bother to do this to.

Pilot Pocket Guides

In high school, the Lonely Planet TV show was one of my favorites. It then became Globe Trekker. Now, thanks to Babelgum, I can see funny guide Ian Wright again. I used to envy Megan McCormick, thinking that if a girl with a slightly shaky voice could present the show, why couldn't I? But now that I've seen quite a few countries, I don't envy them as much.

This is my destination next week. The videos is dated, but I guess a few things are still the same.

Fakes, thieves, handlers and an anime about them all

You must have heard of the two BenCab works "lost" in transit by now. Last Wednesday, CANVAS linked to this somewhat related piece by Ulrich Boser on art theft, Art Fag City interviewed the founder of the Art Handling Olympics, a former workmate said that she once reproduced 10 works by the Impressionists for a house in Forbes, and I was in a shoot where I found out that my photographer, makeup artist and art director all used to paint.

The day before that, my brother recommended the anime series Gallery Fake, based on a Japanese manga. This is not what you expect your art education to come from, but it's an entertaining source nonetheless. Watch it here.

Evolving narratives

Storytellers will find jawbone.tv intriguing. If that's not enough for you, Swarm Entertainment's other projects, Rekill and Nawlz, are great eye-openers to the possibilities way beyond your bedtime read-along.

Boo!

After the craziness of February, it wouldn't make a difference if I start my birth month off on uneven footing. I am doing what I can to get back into the groove of blogging and studio work, and things are slowly shaping up. Let's reverse feng shui March with links that will make you react in an interesting way. Let's go.

Voter education, Filipino-style

A group called Sexbomb Dancers teamed up with the dancing inmates from the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center to perform “Bilog na Hugis Itlog", a song meant to educate viewers about the automated election system, which will be implemented *fingers crossed* for the first time. Even if you can't understand Filipino, this has some entertainment value.

The message: instead of writing down their chosen candidates' names, the voters will now have to properly shade "egg-shaped ovals" (as in the song title) in the ballot. Here's the complete original music video of the Sexbomb Girls.

If you find this absurd, you probably haven't been to the Philippines, where catchy novelty songs can be heard everywhere. Singing and dancing is part of campaigning... and everyday life!

MAPS in OFW Diaries + Singapore run

We were not told about this in advance, so I found out that MAPS was in OFW Diaries, in the same segment as Guerrero Habulan, Tatong Torres, Valentine Willie, and Constantino Zicarelli. Rico Hizon was also featured in the same episode. Thanks to Egay Fernandez for having his interview in the gallery while our show was on. Jump to 3:19 to see it.

Pro is the OFW artist in Team MAPA, but I guess today, you can call me that, too. Five of my paintings (including Hadrian, the portrait Egay's left in the screenshot) and four of Pro's will be on view at Galerie Joaquin Singapore from today until January 10, 2010.

CSI Practice

You know the scenario: something has happened, but it's too uzi to ask what's going on. A week ago, I took the Ayala Loop aircon jeep. Somewhere near the corner of Dela Rosa and Greenbelt 5, there was a police car and photographers. There were many onlookers on the elevated walkway. I couldn't see anything unusual, but on my way back to Glorietta, I passed by the area again. I noticed that:
1) It was too noisy in the block before that street corner. I couldn't hear the podcast I was listening to. Generators.
2) There was no more crowd on the street corner but there were still some people watching from the walkway, as
3) MERALCO men were fixing wires on the poles above
4) There was a section of the street corner that was lined with yellow police tape. There was some blood and some tree branches.

Too easy, no?

The next day, I looked if there was a report about it in Inquirer. None. D texted that it came out in a tabloid. I got it right. Someone jumped from the building and got caught in the wires, cutting off power. Maybe I should try something a little tougher to reconstruct than that. But of course you hope that you won't come across scenes like that more often.

Cafes, celebs and convenience stores

Three levels of Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf!

Cafes
Yes, you'll see Starbuck and CBTL here, as well as others with interesting names.

Eh?

Celebs
Like home, there are endorsements from everyone.

My brother's skating idol Yuna Kim endorses Smoothie King and Anycall. (Aside: It was cool to see 7D dried mangoes at Smoothie King. And Philippine bananas on the street corner. Mabuhay!). I don't even want to count Rain's endorsements.

C-listers? On the boob tube, there are channels for games, TV shopping and learning. Now this is essential in Korea: spotted on the Learn English program, "I am so drunk" and "Let's get wasted!"

Convenience stores
7-11, GS25 and Family Mart are the most common.

there's one on the boat

Use up your bandwidth 1

It's not environment-friendly, but if you need your fill of title sequences (and they can be inspiring), look up Forget the Film, Watch the Titles. Digital agency Bigfish hosts Fest, which has animation shorts (some disturbing). And if you need 1,000 songs, Windows will give you just that at ReverbNation.

Wallander

I will watch anything with:

1) rapeseed fields in full bloom (oh wait, there's an exception)
2) Kenneth Branagh

So you can just imagine how I feel about this:

I wish he had a Swedish instead of a British accent. But he looks Swedish enough, no?

The new No.5

J'aime bien le nouveau film avec Audrey Tautou pour Chanel No.5. C'est très, très beau et très, très français.

Mais j'adore le pub avec Nicole Kidman.

Your life, in six words + uncomfortable plot summaries + the resident Trekkie

Daily Lit's got a reader challenge: write a six-word autobiography.

What would I write? Let me see...

Studied, traveled, wrote, painted, blogged, loved.
OR
Always in awe of the universe.

What's yours?

===

Somewhat related: uncomfortable plot summaries.

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S: Pretty redneck girl fools socialites, flirts with gay gigolo
CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY: Deranged pedophile big-business industrialist tortures and mutilates young children
JUNO: Teen fails to get abortion, ruins lives

===

I never realized how much of a Trekkie my brother is. Blame it on our yaya, who gave my brother a book on Gene Roddenberry.

I looked up their summaries to save myself the trouble:

STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE: Meglomaniac can’t let go of past glory, drives successor to suicide
STAR TREK IV: Interplanetary fugitives poach wildlife from a past age to cover up an act of genocide
STAR TREK VI: Racist military commander past his prime nearly ruins galactic peace

QWERTY

Let's cheer on Paolo Dy, who's hoping to be one of the 16 contestants on Spielberg's reality show for filmmakers, On The Lot.

B calls Dy's short film QWERTY theatrical. Maybe that's partly because he got actors from Repertory. I'm proud to have met three of them: Arvin, Altair and Cathy. Good job, guys!
